Remove copy from layer name

Postby Mike Hale » Wed Dec 02, 2009 2:46 pm

From the comments on John Nack's blog http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2009/11/wo ... ayers.html there are a lot of people that dislike copy added to the layer name when it is duplicated.

Here is a Configurator panel that will rename all or selected layers removing 'copy' or 'copy #' from the layer name.

Hi Mike,

Thanks a lot for this phantastic extension. It's so helpful to make the PSD more clearer with one click.

I'm wondering if you could modify your extension a bit so that it would also support the german version of Photoshop.

The only change you have to do (I assume) is to use "Kopie" and "Kopie #" instead of "copy".
It seems to be that the current version works without problems in a german PS. The script is searching but doesn't find anything.

I would be very grateful if you could provide an additional german compatible version.

I found an Adobe zstring for copy. I edited the panel to use that string so it should now work with any language Photoshop supports.

Please let me know if this does not work, I can only test with an English version of Photoshop.

Wow, that was fast :)

I tested it on a english version of PS-CS4 but it didn't remove "Kopie" :( (I loaded a PSD from a german PS version)
Removing "copy" still works fine.

Did it work for you when you rename a layer and include "Kopie"?

I will test it again some hours later when I have access to a german version of PS-CS4 and give feedback.

PS: Is it correct that the new version of the extension has still the version number 1.0.0?

The change that Mike made will only change out 'Kopie' on the german version of PS. I suppose he could add a text widget to specify what 'copy' translates to in the PSD file instead of what 'copy' is in the version of PS you happen to be running...

I thought that having it work with a language in addition to English was a good idea so I made it work with any language. But to do so means it uses the language that Photoshop is localized with. So it will only use German with the German version of Photoshop.

I thought that would be better for everybody and avoid having more than one version.

The panel is made with Configurator 1.0. There does not seem to be a way to change the version number or author. I think those values in the extension manager show the version number and author of Configurator and not the panel itself.

Do you often need to correct a German document on an English version of Photoshop? I have not used text widgets with Configurator 1.0 panels so I not sure how Xbytor's suggestion would work with this panel.

So here is my feedback. The new version works perfectly in a german PS.

No problem about the version number. I just wanted to know the reason.

I don't use that combination of Photoshop versions very often. I'm totally happy with this new version. So no special efforts for me please :) A full language supported version would be very cool, but as I said, not necessarily needed.

Thanks a lot Mike!

Sorry, it is a Configurator 1 panel and can not be installed in CS3.

If you like I can post the code used in the panel that renames the layers later today. That way you may be able to remove copy from all layers by running a script. I think the code that removes copy from selected layers requires CS4 or better even when run as a script as it uses a document descriptor key that is not in CS3.

Hi Mike,

I got CS5 and unfortunately your brilliant rename script seems to be that it doesn't work anymore. I load it successfully in the extension manager without problems. But it doesn't appear under windows > extensions :( Would it be possible that you could have a look and trying to fix it? Maybe there are only some version checks?

Best regards

It is a Configurator 1 panel and as I understand no panel created with that version works in CS5. I didn't think to update to Configurator 2 as CS5 has an option not to add copy to the layer name. But I guess that it still could be useful if you have files created in older versions.

Incredible fast Mike :)

Thanks a lot again, it's working now and additional thanks for the hint about the new layer option in CS5. Didn't know that. But your script is still very useful for me because I often receive .psd files with a lot of copied layers.
